SummerJazzCycleTour 2016
The SummerJazzCycleTour and Dutch Performing Arts work closely together on an international visitors' programme to introduce (new) Dutch work, musicians and bands to the right international presenters.
In thirty years the SummerJazzCycleTour (SJCT) has developed into one of the treasures of the Dutch festival landscape.
On the last Saturday in August it is time once again to pick a cycling route through the gorgeous Reitdiep valley, to the north-west of the city of Groningen. There will be 32 concerts in medieval churches and farmers’ barns. Five cycling routes offer a way into the varied programme full of the latest trends in jazz and improvised music from The Netherlands and abroad.
Seasoned percussionists like Han Bennink, Martin van Duynhoven and Paul Lovens will be joining 'young' musicians with a great heart and soul. Jasper van't Hof is supported by a fresh rhythm section in his new 1/4tet. Kaja Draksler opted for the experienced Danish improviser Lotte Anker. Giuseppe Doronzo guests with the Morgenthaler/Röllin duo. Greetje Bijma brings her son Doeke Bekius (guitar) to the stage. Veteran pianist Frans Wieringa, who made an album with tenor giant Ben Webster in 1969, will perform with bassist Oeds Bouwsma. And the 76-year-old American multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee will have a work-out with the Scandinavian hardcore trio The Thing.
The SummerJazzCycleTour and Dutch Performing Arts work closely together on an international visitors' programme to introduce (new) Dutch work, musicians & bands to the right international presenters. There is a special focus on presenters from the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland (UK/ROI). Members of the Jazz Promotion Network will attend the SummerJazzCycleTour and other jazz events in the Netherlands in light of a future project to increase the performances and visibility of Dutch jazz in the UK/ROI.
The visitors' programme is made possible by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands.
